Rooted in Excellence. Committed to Service.

Our Legacy Begins: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

|

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 16, 1920, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by five courageous and forward-thinking women: Arizona Cleaver Stemmons, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goins, Pearl Anna Neal, and Fannie Pettie Watts. These women, known as the Five Pearls, envisioned a sorority that would stand for scholarship, service, sisterhood, and finer womanhood. Unlike many of their time, they focused on community-centered ideals and inclusivity rather than elitism and social status.

The organization quickly distinguished itself through its emphasis on meaningful action, particularly in underserved communities. Over time, Zeta Phi Beta expanded across the United States and internationally, forming a global network of women committed to leadership, education, and service. Its unique constitutional bond with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, forms one of the most distinctive partnerships in the National Pan-Hellenic Council and highlights Zeta’s foundation in unity and collaboration.

Shaping the future

Mission

Arizona Cleaver Stemmons was the first president and played a vital role in shaping the direction of the sorority from the beginning. Myrtle Tyler Faithful, who later served as the second Grand Basileus, helped expand the sorority's early reach. Viola Tyler Goins was passionate about youth education and mentorship. Pearl Anna Neal, a trained musician and educator, brought cultural enrichment into the sorority’s foundation. Fannie Pettie Watts focused on structure and sustainability, helping ensure the longevity of the organization. Each of these women brought unique strengths and a shared determination to create a sisterhood rooted in purpose.

Their legacy remains the foundation of Zeta’s values and national vision. Their lives and contributions are continuously celebrated by chapters around the world, including here in Flint.

These six women established a chapter that reflected the core values of Zeta while adapting them to the local needs of Flint. Their leadership, foresight, and courage provided the framework for the chapter’s long-standing excellence. Their commitment to uplifting others laid a foundation of service that every chapter member continues to build upon.
